Felt headbands and finger puppets

So I had this idea to give Ria’s classmates headbands for girls and finger puppets for boys this Christmas.  Since I will do felt this Christmas, I decided to make felt pouches and wallets for our other friends too.

So I bought yards of different colored felt cloth worth P120/yard at VC Trading in Farmers Plaza.  I also bought google/moving eyes, different ribbons and buttons to accentuate the headbands.

Here are the final products (though I was not able to take a picture of all the products)

I put a ribbon on the headband to serve as the base color then I just added different designs, whatever I felt doing that time.  I also made different templates and patterns both for the headband and puppets.

For the puppets, I made cute monsters and animals for the boys.  Here are the products:

All of them were hand-sewn using DMC threads.  I made sure I used darker colors for light felt cloth to serve as design but for some, I just used the same shade.  The animal eyes were black glass beads (the round ones) since our puncher has big holes and the google eyes are very big for them.

I tried to search for different cute monsters as my guide but as I go along with my sewing, I just scribbled some shapes and put eyes and mouth to make them monsters.  It’s fun!  The ideas are endless from color to mouth to eyes.  I enjoyed doing the puppets 🙂

Prices:

Google eyes small: P3/5 pairs

Google eyes big: P5/5 pairs

Ribbon (ribbed): P5/yard

Ribbon (plain, 1/4″): P1/yard

Headbands: P6/piece

The amazing videos of Red Hands by Walk Off the Earth

Mommyhood Journey

I’m a fan of Walk Off the Earth (WOTE) since I saw their cover of Somebody that I used to know by Gotye where they played just one guitar (and ukulele).  Click here for the “5 peeps 1 guitar“.

WOTE is a known Canadian band doing out-of-this-world videos of their covers (and low cost video too).  They use different instruments and even things we normally use every day.  They even used a car as their instrument.

And just this week, I saw this amazing video.  You will not understand it at first but after watching the next video I attached, you will be amazed..really.

So here’s the first video. 🙂

And now, watch this one. 🙂

See, WOTE is really amazing 🙂

Handmade invitations: Minnie Mouse

I wanted to personalize my daughter’s birthday invitations for her classmates.  So I searched for minnie mouse invitations to have an idea on what to do.  I combined all the things I saw.  So here’s the product of my research.

Materials

I bought some brown cartolina (or cheap board may also be used) as the base of the card.  I planned to have a folded invitation, just like a normal birthday card.  I also bought black cartolina for minnie’s silhouettes, different patterned gift wrapper (some of which were in my stock already), pink and white polka gift wrapper (for minnie’s ribbon and pouch), colored paper (I bought this months before intended for Ria’s home art activities), pink boards (to border minnie’s silhouettes), abaca fiber (for name tags), colored pens (a little gift for the invitees), pink ribbon (for minnie’s ribbon) and a compass (for circles).

I also printed the party details, names, and tracing names as well as minnie’s silhoutte templates.  I assembled first the base card to know how big the templates should be.

Using the mickey/minnie silhouette template, I traced it on black cartolina and minnie’s ribbon and pouch on the pink polka dots wrapper.

Then assembled them like this.  I put some glue on the border of the pouch only to give space for the party details.

I cut some patterned gift wrappers and plain colored papers for the front page design.  I wanted it to be like a scrapbook.  They’re just few inches in size.

I traced smaller templates of mickey on the black cartolina and pasted them on the pink board.  Then I cut the mickey’s to have these:

I assembled the patterned wrappers, colored papers and minnie’s.  I put a ribbon on mickey’s silhouette to make it look like minnie.  I just tied the ribbon at the center and pasted the whole thing on a white board.

Next, I cut the party details in circles to fit the minnie pouch and inserted the cutouts to each pouch.  The pouch was glued to the right fold of the card.

Then I cut the names for tracing and pasted them on a patterned paper.  I just designed the left side of the fold as simple as possible to avoid crowded page.  I cut the center to create a pen holder and inserted the colored pens I bought.

As finishing touches, I glued the “Oh Toodles” sign at the center of the card with pink polka wrapper border.  Enclosed the invitation by a strip of brown or black paper and tied the name of the invited guest.

Felt crafts!

I found this online shop that sells felt pouches and trinkets.  This inspired me to make my own felt line stuff.  I plan to make long pouches and short pouches, keychains, pencil toppers and whatever product that can be done using felt cloth.

Some of my inspirations are:

Good luck! 🙂

The Road to Three: Ria is turning 3!

It’s about a month before my daughter’s 3rd birthday and this one is special she’s going to celebrate with her classmates.  So I’m already starting to do the necessary preparations to get everything in place for this special occasion.

Theme

We asked our daughter who her favorite character is and she said Mickey Mouse.  I said we’ll have Minnie Mouse instead since she is a girl.  I’m looking for different Minnie and Mickey Mouse party favors and supplies or anything in pink polka dots or plain pink.

Invitations

Invitations will be handmade as we want them to be personalized.  Of course, Minnie Mouse will be there but we are adding some stuff to make it a little bit interactive for kids.  Invitations will be scrapbook like and we want Ria to contribute something by, I guess, pasting some papers? We’ll see.  I will post some pictures once we’re done with the invits.

Loot Bags

I want the loot bags to be also personalized.  So I’m thinking of sewing a cloth bag and we’ll silkscreen it with Minnie’s silhouette.  This way, the kids can still use it for their other stuff (better yet, their moms can make use of it in some other ways).

The loot bags will contain mainly toys (as much as possible, we’ll look for Mickey or Minnie party favors), books (activity books, story books, anything we’ll find), and I want to sew wands with Minnie Mouse or Mickey’s head but it’s still undecided.

For the party favors, we visited SM Department Store (Toy Kingdom) and Robinsons (Toy R Us).  I noted some favors that we could include.  Usually the favors are already in packs of 3, 4 or 6 which is, I think, some kinda saver for parents who do not have time to go to Divisoria to look for decent party favors.  The packs are priced P59.75, P49.75 amd P39.75.

Here are the items we have so far:

P59.75: 3 kaleidoscopes (Dora, Spongebob, Ben 10); 3 pinball games (Dora, Transformers); 3 flowerdrums (Spongebob); 3 yoyos (Spongebob, Cars, Dora); 3 cameras (Dora, Spongebob); 4 whistles (Disney princess, Ben 10); 4 tambourines (Spongebob); 4 paddle games (Transformers, Dora); 4 flat tops (Spongebob); and 6 mini tops (Cars)

P49.75: 2 slide puzzles (Cars, Spongebob, Thomas and Friends); 4 springs (Dora, Thomas and Friends, Cars, Ben 10); 4 flying discs (Cars, Spongebob, Ben 10), 4 yoyos (Cars); 6 puzzles (Disney Princess, Mickey Mouse Clubhouse); 6 activity books (Mickey Mouse), 6 flat whistles (Cars)

P39.75: 6 mini tops (Dora, Cars); 6 small pads (Disney princess, Mickey Mouse); 6 small flat whistles (Dora); 6 coach whistles (Ben 10)

There are also coin banks available in Mickey Mouse and other characters at P89.75 for four pieces each pack.  Character pencils are also available at P79.75 which are usually Dora and Spongebob.

Japan Home Center and Saizen also have party favors that can be used such as refillable pencils (Mickey Mouse), 24 mini colored pencils, 6 sheets of stickers and one tube that contains 75 different sized hair ties all available at P88 each.

Party Supplies (Tablewares)

Since we are planning for a Minnie Mouse party, I’m looking for pink polka dots or plain pink supplies, if ever there are no Minnie Mouse supplies available.  I found a pack of Mickey Mouse table napkin in 20’s worth P99 at Toys R Us.  Haileighs Haven, an online shop, is also offering Minnie Mouse napkins available at P60 per 20 pieces.  We could buy a pack then the others will just have a regular or cheaper table napkins.  I’m still considering to buy other designs since it’s a bit pricey.  There are pink table napkins in Japan Home Center worth P88 for 50 pieces.

There are also polka dots table napkins in Celebrations Party Central for P60 per 20 pieces and P119 for 24 pieces  or P95 per 20 pieces available at Party Basics Online.  There are cheaper printed napkins in SM worth P24.75 for 50 pieces but as much as possible I want the supplies to be with the theme.

For the cups, it is really hard to look for cups in polka dots that are cheap. Paper Chic Studio offers polka cups worth P150 per 10 pieces.  For me, it’s out of my budget so I’m checking other shops that offer cheaper cups.  I’m also considering buying plain pink pastel cups or just any pastel color paper cups.  Celebrations Party Central has plain pastel pink cups worth P48/8 cups.  But I talked to my officemate and she said she just bought juice in tetrapaks.

Saizen, the Japanese store, offers 25 pastel colored cups (but in different colors) for P88 per pack while Japan Home Center has 20 printed cups for P88 also.  SM has 50 striped-printed cups worth P84.75 and 24 scribble printed cups (blue or pink) at P57.75 per pack.  Shopwise Cubao also has stripe-designed cups at P69 per 25 cups.

Paper straws are also cute but we would not use them.  In case anyone wants to know how much they cost, SM supermarket has P59.75 paper straws (stripes, different colors) for 50 pieces.

Party Hats

To be unique, I don’t want to use the ordinary party hats.  I saw a tutorial on how to do the Minnie Mouse and Mickey Mouse ears.  I want to make those and instead of hats, the kids will wear them.  But I also saw Mickey Mouse party hats at Haileigh Souvenir Haven.

Haileigh Souvenir Haven: P35/10 hats (wholesale); P4/hat (retail)

A great tutorial on how to make Minnie Mouse ears is available here.  You can make ears like these:

I will make another entry on my finished products.  Hoping they will be presentable 🙂
